ShopriteX Predictive Analytics
ShopriteX constantly asks itself: “What data is important?” To answer that, Symbyte developed an automated consumer-behaviour spotting tool. Surfacing the 15–20 metrics that actually matter across billions of records on a scheduled basis.
The Challenge
Billions of Records. Which 20 Matter?
ShopriteX is Africa’s largest retailer and with that scale comes an almost overwhelming volume of data. The question they needed to answer wasn’t “how do we collect more?” It was “what are we supposed to look at?”
Within Shoprite’s ocean of data, it’s a massive operational undertaking to know what data is important or trending at any given moment. Without a systematic approach, analysts were spending weeks manually sifting through datasets looking for signals only to produce reports that were already outdated by the time they landed.
ShopriteX needed an automated solution that could continuously scan billions of consumer behaviour records, identify what was statistically trending, and deliver those insights to stakeholders in a format they could act on immediately without requiring any manual analyst intervention.
- Billions of retail records
- Manual signal detection
- Slow insight delivery
- Analyst bottlenecks
- Consumer behaviour trends
Challenge
Solutions Built
Two Components. One Automated Pipeline.
Symbyte designed and built a two-part system: a statistical algorithm that automatically identifies what’s trending across billions of records, and a delivery mechanism that packages and distributes those insights on a schedule without any manual involvement.
Built on AWS and Python, the system runs continuously against ShopriteX’s full data estate, surfacing 15–20 trending consumer behaviour metrics at any point in time.
Trend Spotting Algorithm
A statistical algorithm that scans Shoprite’s billions of records and automatically identifies 15–20 trending consumer behaviour metrics at any point in time — distinguishing genuine signals from noise at scale.
Automated Delivery Tool
The identified consumer behaviour trends are wrapped, formatted into a polished PDF report, and automatically shipped to stakeholders on a scheduled basis — zero manual effort required after deployment.
Scalable Cloud Architecture
The entire pipeline runs on AWS, designed to scale horizontally as data volumes grow. Python handles the statistical modelling layer; Cube.js provides the semantic abstraction that makes insights consistent and query-efficient.
Automated Trend Detection
15–20 statistically significant consumer behaviour trends identified automatically across billions of records no analyst intervention required to find what matters.
Scheduled Stakeholder Delivery
Insights packaged as polished PDF reports and delivered to the right people on a scheduled cadence always current, always relevant, zero manual effort.
Analyst Hours Reclaimed
The weeks of manual data sifting that previously underpinned each insight cycle were replaced by an automated system — freeing the analytics team to focus on decisions, not data wrangling.
Scalable at Retail Scale
The pipeline was built on AWS cloud infrastructure, designed to handle Shoprite's massive transaction volumes and scale as the data estate continues to grow.
