Knowledge Isn’t Power – Gain Wisdom From Data
Knowledge Isn't Power - Gain Wisdom From Data
First, let’s start with what knowledge is:
From Data to Wisdom (and Where “Leverage” Lives)
Most companies collect oceans of data. A brave few turn that into information. An even smaller circle distils information into knowledge. But only the sharpest teams climb one rung higher and turn knowledge into wisdom — actionable leverage that tilts outcomes in their favour.
So, no: knowledge itself isn’t power. It’s the crowbar that lets you move something far heavier than your own weight.
A Quick Thought Experiment on the Highway
How obedient are you to speed limits?
- Your car’s speedometer almost certainly shows 3–5 km/h faster than you’re actually travelling.
- Most municipalities add a “grace band” of ~8 km/h before a camera flashes.
Put the two together and a posted 80 km/h limit often means you’d sail through at an actual 92 km/h without a ticket. That single nugget of knowledge doesn’t hand you “power”; it hands you options. Drive the exact posted limit and arrive later, or tap into the hidden buffer and shave minutes off the trip. The choice is yours — that’s leverage.
(Disclaimer: leverage ≠ licence to speed. Know your own buffer before flooring it.)
Leverage at Corporate Scale: Capitec’s Real‑Time Edge
I’m working through Stalking Giants by T.J Strydom, and one anecdote smacked me between the eyes: Capitec’s leadership insisted on near–real‑time operational metrics long before most banks could spell “streaming pipeline”.
Nothing exotic, just dashboards that refreshed within minutes, not overnight. Yet that modest latency upgrade gave Capitec three unfair advantages:
- Faster course‑correction – Fraud spikes or branch bottlenecks surfaced while they were still fixable.
- Culture of action – When data turns into decisions the same day, teams expect immediate insight everywhere.
- Compounding gains – Every closed feedback loop fed the next improvement cycle, snowballing advantage.
Plenty of competitors owned the same data. What they lacked was the leverage of timeliness. Hours‑old numbers left them fighting yesterday’s fires tomorrow.
Why Real‑Time Beats “Report‑Time”
We’ve entered an era where AI models retrain hourly and “data‑driven” slogans wallpaper every slide deck. But if your executive dashboard still lags by a full business day, you’re leaving leverage on the table.
- Pricing can’t react to demand surges.
- Inventory swings from overstock to stock‑outs.
- Customer sentiment festers on social feeds while your quarterly VoC report gathers dust.
Speed is the silent multiplier that turns knowledge into outsized impact.
Bringing It Home
- Audit your latency – How old is the “freshest” metric on the CEO’s phone? If it’s measured in hours, start sweating.
- Surface the hidden buffers – Like the speedometer example, every process has a tolerance band. Expose it, quantify it, and decide when to push it.
- Bias for action – Knowledge unused is just politely‑formatted trivia. Build workflows that force a next step the moment a metric moves.
Because at the end of the day, knowing you can drive 92 km/h without a fine isn’t what gets you to the meeting on time. Choosing to nudge the pedal, confident in your margin, does.
Final Word
Information may be the new oil, but leverage is the refinery. Don’t just collect barrels of knowledge and boast about the size of your data lake. Refine it, pressurise it, and point the nozzle at an outcome that matters.
Power is overrated. Leverage wins.
